Klimt's Women

Gustav Klimt is remembered as one of the greatest symbolist and decorative painters of the twentieth century. Women—be they historical figures, members of Viennese high society or the artist’s friends and acquaintances—feature heavily in Klimt’s oeuvre. Despite the artist’s enormous popularity today, Klimt’s work was controversial during his lifetime and often criticized for its sexual themes.
